When and Why Do We Pray?

David’s Song of Praise

We’re called to pray often and for any and every reason.

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Ephesians 6:18 NIV

Scripture tells us that God listens when we strive to live by His will.

“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

1 Peter 3:12 NIV

We pray for healing and forgiveness in times of sin and suffering.

And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.”

James 5:15 NIV

We pray for His great mercy with humility.

“The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer.”

Psalm 6:9 NIV

We pray to feel God’s presence.

“What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?”

Deuteronomy 4:7 NIV

We pray to give Him praise in favorable times…

“Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing the praises of your name.”

2 Samuel 22:50 NIV

and painful moments...

“…The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.”

Job 1:20 NIV

We pray to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and to serve and honor Him, not ourselves.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2 NIV

“Early the next morning, while it was still dark, Jesus woke and left the house. He went to a lonely place, where he prayed.”

Mark 1:35
